Quake worries Pakistan's Miss Earth candidate

10/30/2008 10:31 PM

Subic Bay Freeport, Philippines – Two weeks before the contest, Pakistan’s representative to Miss Earth beauty pageant looked elegant and poised. However, she admitted that earthquake that rattled her native land earlier that day worries her.“My heart bleeds for them but these things happen," Nosheen said. “I just hope that help with reach them."Nosheen’s worry stemmed from the pre-dawn earthquake that rocked Pakistan's south-western Baluchistan province. Reports said, the 6.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred at about 5:10 a.m. claimed more than 200 lives and injured hundreds of others.Nosheen, the 23-year-old beauty queen from Brierfield, United Kingdom, said she has yet to hear from the Pakistan Embassy in Manila about the real condition in her country. News reports said that Dilawar Kakar, the mayor of Ziarat town - the place that was gravely hit by the disaster - has been persistently asking for help. While waiting, Nosheen said that she constantly updates herself via the internet. In fact, “after this (interview), I will surf the net to get a better sense of what is happening."“But after the pageant, I hope to go around the Pakistani communities in Britain and gather as much help as I can," she added.Nosheen, who arrived in the country with the other contestants last October 19 was introduced before the members of the press at the Lighthouse Hotel in Subic Bay Wednesday evening. Pageant contestants were also toured at the various tourist attractions in Subic Bay as part of the promotional tour of the environmentally-orientated beauty pageant. When asked if she would consider pulling out of the pageant, Nosheen explained that her decision would really depend on the outcome of the situation.“It is a very personal question. I will decide if and when any news puts me on that situation," Nosheen explained. “But as of the moment, I am praying for my people and I am hoping for the best." Nosheen, a communications student in Sheffield University, was only runner-up in the Miss Pakistan World 2008.However, since the winner was unable to participate in pageant, Nosheen was chosen by the pageant organizers to represent Pakistan in the eight Miss Earth beauty pageant, which will be held on November 9, at the Clark Expo Amphitheater in Angeles, Pampanga. - GMANews.T

New found Pakistani beauties: Nosheen Idrees all set to take Pakistan to Miss Earth 2008

Miss Earth started off in 2001 and has now entered its seventh year of introducing an environment healthy beauty pageant. Now, what's an environment friendly pageant? Apparently Miss Earth is giving a new meaning to beauty pageants by promoting a clean and healthy environment. This year Nosheen Idrees - a 22 year old girl from Jhelum, Pakistan, will be representing Pakistan in the Miss Earth pageant.

Nosheen was crowned the third runner up for the Miss Pakistan World pageant in May 2008 and is the first to represent Pakistan in Philippines for the Miss Earth pageant.

It's not just an 'ordinary' beauty contest but has something more attached to it. The main purpose of the Miss Earth pageant is to urge the candidates and winners to actively promote and get involved in the preservation of the environment and the protection of the world.
So who is Nosheen? She is a student of communications at the University of Sheffield, UK and hopes to bring back a title that can put Pakistan on the map as a country that has the most beautiful women in the world. According to sources, Nosheen says, "Pakistan is a country where the most beautiful women exist and it's a shame that it's not recognised for it."
Nosheen is set to change the perception of how the world looks at Pakistan and hopes to be able to spread the message of peace for her country and be a great ambassador for the youth. Considering she's spent all her life in the UK, we can only imagine how perfect she will be in representing our country.

But there is one thing for sure… Pakistan is being represented by these Pakistani origin pardesi girls in different international beauty pageants; whether we like it or not! Natasha Paracha, the winner of Miss Pakistan World 2008 is busy with her shoots, while the fourth runner up of the same pageant is all set to participate in the World Miss University 2008 pageant in China.
Sonia Ahmed, President of Miss Pakistan World, made a statement recently saying that Pakistan has reached 20 international pageants in just five years time and that the main mission is to continue with the effort to get Pakistan recognised as the country with the most talented and beautiful women in the world.

But, how many of us have really heard about any of these pageants or, more importantly, how many of the participating girls have even been to Pakistan? That's a question to ponder about!

Nosheen Idrees: The New Miss Earth Pakistan 2008

by John Soul

Nosheen Idrees, 22, from Brierfield, is set to compete to the internationally acclaimed Miss Earth 2008 since the winner of Miss Pakistan World 2008 is unable to participate this coming November. A degree student in communication studies at Sheffield University, Nosheen is a part-time model. Despite always having lived in Lancashire, Nosheen qualified for the Miss Pakistan World 2008 competition because of her Pakistani heritage. Nosheen attended Mansfield High School in Brierfield and studied a BTEC in Media at Burnley College before going to Sheffield University.

Miss Pakistan World is based in Toronto and has been holding beauty contests for Pakistan women since 2003. The contest is held in Canada as Pakistani law and custom prevents any such contests from being held there.Nosheen said: "At the present time it wouldn't be accepted by many people but it would help for things like tourism. Also, Toronto has a lot more facilities available to the organizers than Pakistan."The goal of the pageant is to allow Pakistani women to showcase their talents and beauty on an international stage and the winner is supposed to compete in Miss Earth, an environmentally orientated beauty pageant, however since the winner is unable to partake due to unavoidable circumstances Nosheen, was chosen by the Miss Pakistan World Organizers since she is one of the runners-up.

Nosheen said: “I will be having organized events, where I would gather volunteers and seek the local municipal government’s help in planting more trees. I would also organize a 'Clean Day Event', where all volunteers including myself would go out and clean 3-4 streets per month. Also I would work with my national director and organize seminars where I'd educate more girls or upcoming models about this part of society as well.”The 8th edition of Miss Earth beauty pageant will be held on November 9, 2008 at the Clark Expo Amphitheater in Angeles, Pampanga, Philippines and over 90 delegates are expected to arrive on October 19, 2008. http://www.voy.com/217922/
